Bulletproof is seem ridiculous for people with ADHD.
When I make my coffee, my daughter thinks I’m ridiculous. I add so much cream to the coffee that my coffee should be called “coffee flavored cream”.
That’s how I like my coffee, and there’s a great reason behind that.
I recently attended several nutrition conferences and I learned A LOT of new and surprising information. It’s amazing all the new info recently coming out from new researches and studies are changing medicine.
One of these new concepts were intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet for better brain function.
I’m a board-certified specialist in pediatric nutrition. There are only 2 reasons I put patients on a ketogenic diet – mitochondrial disorder or intractable seizure.
These conferences opened my eyes to a whole new world about the food we eat everyday. The idea of ketogenic diet for autism, Alzheimer’s and ADHD was totally new to me.
What is Bulletproof Coffee?
Have you heard of Bulletproof coffee? My guess is probably yes.
This caffeinated concoction of butter, MCT oil, and coffee has been advertised as giving drinkers the cleanest form of energy while leading to weight loss.
David Asprey, creator of the Bulletproof coffee, found the recipe while hiking in Tibet. The coffee contains low-mold coffee beans, grass-fed butter, which is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acid and vitamins, and medium chain fatty acid. The end product is a 450-calories cup of breakfast joe that promise drinkers a clean boost of energy and focus.
The idea is to drink bulletproof coffee as an alternative to breakfast as part of the intermittent fasting.
The intermittent fasting diet is actually a MODIFIED ketogenic diet. You only have to fast 12-18 hours a day x2-3 times a week. If you eat your last meal at 7pm, wake up that next morning and eat first carb-free meal or drink bulletproof coffee, then start eating a small snack at say 10-11am, you’d have fast 15 hours.
What’s the Benefit of Bulletproof Coffee for ADHD?
The caffeine in the coffee help increase focus and concentration by increasing activity in the frontal cortex. The fats from the coffee will push the body into ketosis along with the overnight fast, which results in ketone bodies that the brain cells would use instead of carbs.
The ketones bodies provide a sustainable source of energy to feed the brain for better focus.
Sometimes people keep drinking coffee because they build up a tolerance. But the simple trick is to take extra vitamin B.
If the coffee alone does not cut it for you, take two capsules of Active B-Complex with your Bulletproof coffee. The vitamin Bs will boost your energy level up another notch.
The more caffeine you drink, the more your body will become tolerant to higher dose.
Vitamin Bs works in a different mechanism to create the energy the brain needs.
Don’t believe me. Look at the ingredient list on a can of Monster Drink.
That’s what energy drinks are, a mix of caffeine, vitamin Bs and other natural stimulants.
And in case you’re concern that caffeine can stunt growth, here’s an article from John Hopkins, who states that coffee does not cause stunt growth.

If you have a normal sugary coffee drinks, you’ll get a boost of energy from both the caffeine and the sugar, but you’ll also experience the crash when the insulin pushes the sugar way too low.
