ADHD medication is not for everyone for many different reasons. ADHD medications affect brain chemicals therefore, stopping cold turkey is not advised. But there are ways to do it safely and calmly without drama.
When my daughter was little her piano teacher bought her a pet turtle for her birthday. We kept the turtle for years and it’s my daughter’s responsibility to feed it and clean its tank.
You know how pets go in a family. It ended up becoming the parent’s responsibility. So I proposed to release the turtle into my daughter’s schools’ lily pond.
My daughter’s school has a big lily pond filled with turtles. But we’re afraid that “Turtle” (our turtle’s name; the creativity lies in the lack of originality in the name selection) may not survive the wild on its own because it’s been in captivity with food fed to it daily.
It has never in his life look for food and eat anything else. We did offer vegetables, but we did not know what to do with them.
Why am I telling your this story? What does it have to do with stopping ADHD meds?
Keep reading, I’m going to enlighten you.
To stop ADHD medications safely and effectively, you have to understand how the brain and ADHD medications work.
Think of ADHD medications like the hijackers of airplanes. It takes over your command center (your brain), that’s why the side effects are so miserable and you don’t feel like yourself, because YOU ARE NO LONGER in control.
Let’s start with some brain science lessons first. I promise this is easy and simple to understand. No biochemistry degree required.
Brain cells communicate by sending signals or brain chemicals to each other.
For the brain to do anything, like opening a door or blinking an eye, brain cells have to pass the information along to each other. This process is called neurotransmission.
The tail end of the sending neuron releases a small number of brain chemicals, which cross a tiny gap—called a synapse—to reach the tip of the receiving neuron.
With ADHD, this process of crossing the gap may be interrupted in different ways:
- The sender nerve cells may not release enough neurotransmitters.
- The brain chemicals may have trouble landing on the landing pads (receptors) on the receiver brain cells.
- The sender’s brain cells may be too quick to recycle the brain chemicals back up before the brain chemicals reach the other side of the gap.
How ADHD Medication Works?

Medication can reduce ADHD symptoms by helping the brain chemicals pass across the gap more efficiently.
Some ADHD medications stimulate the brain cells to release more brain chemicals. Another slows down the recycling of the brain chemical, so more brain chemical is available to attach to the receptors on the other side of the gap. Both of these actions can increase the number of brain chemicals reaching the landing pad on the receiving brain cells.
The ADHD brain is “Turtle,” and the medication is feeding it daily.
Now guess what happens when you stop the ADHD medication?
The brain’s chemical level drops significantly because there’s nothing to keep its level artificially up. Without ADHD medications, the ADHD brain does not know what to do, and it can’t keep up the dopamine level in the gap by itself.
After years of being on ADHD medications, your brain may not know what to do when the medication is not there to artificially boost the dopamine level and other brain chemicals.
This is the same reason why many adults with ADHD become addicted to illegal drugs because ADHD medications and amphetamine are almost the same.
Your solution is to boost your brain’s own function naturally, meaning your brain needs to learn to make its own brain chemical with natural resources.
Think of it as rehab for your brain. It’s the same concept as “Give a man a fish, and you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you’ve fed him for a lifetime.”

The normal human body makes dopamine. But in the ADHD brain, either the body is not making enough or there are not enough dopamine receptors to activate it or you’re eating food that is messing up the dopamine system (sugar, processed foods, and food additives).

- Eat protein-rich diet. Dopamine is a protein molecule made from tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine.
- Avoid processed foods, high-fats, sugar, caffeine, all of which interfere with brain signaling and causing brain inflammation.
- Get enough sleep. Sleep helps all the cells in the body repair and renew. It gives the brain a chance to wash away toxins that build up during the day and helps keep the nerve cell connections and pathways active and constantly self-renewing. - Exercise daily. increases the production of new brain cells, slows down brain cell aging, can increase your levels of dopamine.

Why ADHD Medication Stops Working?
Your child was started on ADHD medication and was doing fine until it wasn’t.

So, overall time, the remaining dopamine is being used up and the medication has nothing to boost. It’s like playing tennis without tennis balls.

ADHD medication also does not work if the ADHD symptoms are triggered by hidden food intolerances. The only treatment for this is an elimination diet that eliminates suspected food triggers.
