GMO and ADHD

Walk down any grocery aisles of any large market or flipping through magazines, you’ll find many products and advertisement prominently labeled “Non-GMOs.”

So what’s the deal with non-GMOs?

Let’s look at the history of genetically modified food first. Genetically modified food is not completely unknown to human. Humans have domesticated plants and animals since around 12,000 BCE using selective breeding or artificial selection, which is the  opposite to Darwinian’s natural selection. In selective breeding, the organisms with desired traits or genes are used to breed the next generation, and organisms with the undesired trait or genes are not bred. This is a precursor to the modern genetic modification. Real life example – dog breeding. Therefore, farmers and agricultural scientists have been genetically engineering the foods we eat for centuries through breeding programs.

The new generation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), on the other hand, are living organisms whose genetic material or DNA has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

So you see the difference?

Okay, this is completely different from how human has been doing for centuries the natural way. The new GMOs blend together DNA of various species. That’s unnatural and weird.

I see Frankenfoods!

It’s like human relationships. Interracial relationship is normal, but not interspecies relationship. No, no, no…

If the logic that GMOs is okay, are we starting to breed human with birds, so human will be born with wings to fly?

So “Are GMOs safe?”

I don’t know…

Depending on the sources you read, some sources say “there is a growing body of evidence that connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage, and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights”. Then you read somewhere else, and they say “in the decades since the first genetically modified foods reached the market, no adverse health effects among consumers have been found”. This is not to say there are none.

Most consumers seem to be still hesitant. Among the commonly expressed concerns are undesirable changes in nutritional content, the emergence of new allergens, and toxic effects on bodily organs.

About 90 percent of scientists believe GMOs are safe. This includes the American Medical Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the World Health Organization. Only slightly more than a third of consumers share this same belief.

Sixty-four countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, require genetically modified foods to be labeled. Globally, there are also 300 regions with outright bans on growing GMOs.

There’s a lot of Benefits to GMOs, but at what cost?

Gene modification scientists focus on building health benefits into widely used foods, such as genetically engineering crops that can grow in dry and salty soils and tolerate temperature extremes, especially in African and Asian countries, to significantly increase the countries’ food supply, and improving protein, vitamins, and minerals in food crops to improve nutritional intake in a famine area.

I think these are overkill.

These Frankenfoods claim to be solving world hunger problems, but are they really?

More than 80% of all genetically modified crops grown worldwide have been engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, the use of toxic herbicides, such as Roundup®, has increased fifteen-fold since GMOs were first introduced.

In March 2015, the World Health Organization determined that the herbicide glyphosate (the key ingredient in Roundup®) is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Genetically modified crops also are responsible for the emergence of “superweeds” and “superbugs,” which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons such as 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange).

Which Foods Contain GMOs?

GMOs are everywhere. Most packaged foods contain ingredients made from corn, soy, canola, and sugar beet — and the vast majority of those crops grown in North America are genetically modified.

Artificial ingredients in processed food, such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, corn syrup, molasses, sucrose, textured vegetable protein, flavorings, vitamins, yeast products, microbes & enzymes, flavors, oils & fats, proteins, and sweeteners.

Farm animal and fish fed genetically engineered ingredients are common in animal feed. This impacts animal products such as eggs, milk, meat, honey, and seafood.

What is the Verdict on GMOs?

I’ll say no one knows what they’re talking about at this time. I’d recommend proceeding with caution. The long term impacts of these GMOs are unknown. Therefore, “when in doubt, do without”.

Remember ADHD does not doom your child to a life of under-achievement. You know your child is bright, full of potential, and deserves the best. In fact, many of the world’s greatest discoveries and inventions were made by people with ADHD.

I helped my crazy wild child who could not read or write when she was little with the four pillars I laid out in the Eat to Focus book. She’s now a merit scholarship student studying premed at Loyola Chicago University.

So stay strong and keep believing in your child.
